Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)
Procedure: Removal of excess skin and breast tissue with repositioning tissue and nipples to lift, reshape and reduce the size of the breast. (Usually covered by insurance but requires insurance approval prior to surgery.)
Length: 1 to 3 hours
Anesthesia/Hospitalization: General Anesthesia with an ovenight hospital stay.
Side Effects: Temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, change in skin or nipple sensation.
Risks: The procedure may result in permanent loss of feeling tin the breast or nipples. Skin loss and infection may occur, and some patients develop thick, wide scars or unevenly positioned nipples.
Recovery: You may return to work in a week or more. Strenuous activity may be resumed within a month. Scars will fade over the course of several months to a year or more.
Duration of Results: Results are variable. Time, gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight changes may cause new sagging and changes in breast size.
