Dermabrasion

Procedure: Softening of surface irregularities, including acne and other scars and fine wrinkles by mechanical scraping of the top layers of skin using a high-speed rotary wheel. This performed by the surgeon and is a distinctly different procedure than microdermabrasion, which is performed by an aesthetician or nurse.

Length: A few minutes to 1 hour. May require more than 1 session. Performed by Dr. Gray, often in conjunction with another procedure, such as facelift.

Anesthesia/Hospitalization: General anesthesia with no hospitalization.

Side Effects: You may experience temporary tingling, burning, itching, swelling, or redness . Lightening of treated skin. You may develop sensitivity to the sun and/or lose the ability to tan.

Risks: You may temporarily develop tiny whiteheads, infection, flare of skin allergies, fever blisters, or cold sores. Abnormal color changes may occur and may be permanent.

Recovery: You may return to work in 2 weeks and resume normal activity in 4 to 6 weeks. Fading of redness will occur over about 3 months. Pigmentation will return in 6 to 12 months. Sun exposure may resume in 6 to 12 months, but sunscreen and sun avoidance is recommended.

Duration of Results: The skin changes are permanent, although new wrinkles may form as skin ages.
