Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Procedure: Performed to reduce the size of large ears or set prominent ears back closer to the head. This procedure is most often performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14 years and is occasionally covered by insurance.

Length: 2 to 3 hours

Anesthesia/Hospitalization: General anesthesia with no hospitalization.

Side Effects: Temporary pain, throbbing, aching, swelling, redness, or numbness.

 

 

 
   

Risks: The cartilage may become infected. Excessive scarring may occur. A blood clot may develop in the ear and require drainage. The ears may be mismatched or look artificial. The protrusion may reoccur, requiring a second surgery.

Recovery: You may return to work or school in 5 to 7 days, but strenuous activity and contact sports should be avoided for 1 to 2 months.

Duration of Results: Usually permanent.
