Questions

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

Procedure: Removal of excess fat, tightening muscles, and redraping skin to improve sagging facial skin, jowls, and loose neck skin. Most often performed on men and women over 40.

Length: Several hours.

Anesthesia/Hospitalization: General anesthesia. Usually outpatient, but may require an inpatient stay.

Side Effects: Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness of skin; tight feeling, dry skin. Men may need to shave behind the ears where beard-growing skin is repositioned.

Risks: The nerves that control facial muscles or feeling may be damaged. This is usually temporary but may be permanent. Infection, bleeding, poor healing, and excessive scarring may occur. You may develop facial asymmetry or a change in the hairline.

Recovery: You may return to work in 10 to 14 days, but more strenuous activity should be avoided for 2 weeks or more. Bruising will resolve over the course of 2 to 3 weeks. Sun exposure should be limited for several months, but sunscreen and sun avoidance is always recommended.

Duration of Results: Usually 5 to 10 years.
