Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

For a number reasons men may develop excess breast tissue. The condition is usually benign but can interfere with lifestyle and self confidence. It can be treated quite effectively with liposuction and/or excision of the extra tissue.

Procedure: Removal of excess skin and glandular tissue to reduce the size of the breast. (Sometimes covered by medical insurance but requires prior approval.)

Length: 1 hour or more.

Anesthesia/Hospitalization: General Anesthesia with an ovenight hospital stay.

Side Effects: Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, burning sensation.

Risks: Infection, fluid accumulation, and/or injury to the skin may occur. Some patients experience rippling or bagginess of skin. Skin pigmentation changes can develop and may become permanent if exposed to sun. Asymmetry and excessive scarring can sometimes occur. Occasionally a second procedure is required to remove additional tissue.

Recovery: You may return to work in 3 to 7 days, but more strenuous activity should be avoided for 2 to 3 weeks. Swelling and bruising will resolve over the course of 3 to 6 months.

Duration of Results: Permanent.
