Laser Facial Resurfacing

Procedure: Performed by the Dr. Gray using a carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) laser device to treats layers of damaged skin, smoothing the face and fine wrinkles. Effective in reducing lines around the eyes and mouth and minimizing facial scars and unevenly pigmented areas.

Length: A few minutes to 1 hour. May require more than 1 session.

Anesthesia/Hospitalization: Usually general anesthesia and in conjunction with other surgical procedures that may or may not require hospitalization.

Side Effects: Temporary swelling, discomfort. Lightening of treated skin. Acute sun sensitivity. Increased sensitivity to makeup. Pinkness or redness in skin that may persist for up to 6 months.

 

 
   

Risks: aser heat can cause burns or injuries resulting in scarring. Abnormal changes in skin color may occur and flares in viral infections ("cold sores") sometimes occur. Other infections are a risk but rarely occur.

Recovery: You may return to work in 2 weeks. More strenuous activities should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Complete fading of redness will resolve in 6 months or less. Skin pigmentation should return in 6-12 months. Sun exposure should be limited for several months, but sunscreen and sun avoidance is always recommended.

Duration of Results: Long-lasting, but does not stop aging. New wrinkles, expression lines may form as skin ages.
