Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Procedure: Removal excess fat and skin and tightening muscles of abdominal wall to flatten the abdomen.

Length: 2 to 5 hours.

Anesthesia/Hospitalization: General anesthesia. Usually outpatient, but may be performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures that may or may not require hospitalization.

Side Effects: Temporary pain. Swelling, soreness, numbness of abdominal skin, bruising, fatigue for several weeks or months.

Risks: Infection and bleeding under the skin flap can occur. There is a risk of developing blood clots. Poor healing may result in conspicuous scarring or skin loss. A second operation could be required.

Recovery: You may return to work in 2 to 4 weeks, but more strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks or more. Fading and flattening of scars will occur over 3 months to 2 years.

Duration of Results: Results are typically long lasting with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
